Kitchen, Bathroom and Laundry Renovations

Qualified Supervisor Certificate Licence

Licence Overview

You must have a licence before you can do any residential building work in NSW, including kitchen, bathroom and laundry renovation, that is valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials (including GST). Kitchen, bathroom and laundry renovation is work involved in the installation, refurbishment, restoration and on-site repairs of or to a kitchen, bathroom or laundry. It doesn’t include work affecting any internal or external load bearing part of the building that is essential to the stability of the building or any part of it, including things such as foundations, floors, walls, roof, columns and beams.

A Qualified Supervisor Certificate

  • Allows you to supervise and do the work described on your certificate
  • Does not allow you to contract for work

You can apply to have a qualified supervisor certificate issued for 1, 3 or 5 years.

Are you and your business at risk for unlicensed activity?

Australia’s building regulators are intensifying their crackdown on unlicensed and improperly licensed work. Across all states, hundreds of penalties are issued each year, with fines often reaching into the multi-million-dollar range — and businesses being ordered to close.

In Queensland, hundreds of fines have been issued for unlicensed contracting. In NSW, 2024 prosecutions alone resulted in hundreds of penalties, and in Victoria, recent years have seen multi-million-dollar fines issued. Enforcement is ramping up, with large-scale audit blitzes, stop-work orders, and mandatory rectifications becoming increasingly common.
